Berlin

I was in Berlin in 1973, when I was in the army and stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.  It was a foolhardy adventure, but all ended well.  A lot has changed in 43 years, not the least of which, of course, being the wall coming down as the Soviet Union dissolved in 1989.

And some ephemera... birds will sing and balls will fly.

The famous Brandenburg Gate.

A world without walls is the only sustainable world.  ~Bill Clinton

When I was in Berlin, at Checkpoint Charlie, in 1973, I bought this iconic poster, which I subsequently lost.  I had told Jan about it, and she saw it here, and bought me another one.  Without a word, this image says it all...

I had been giving Jan grief the whole trip about having her head buried in her maps, and constantly shuffling them,,and sometimes missing a turn by not looking at where we 'actually' were.

Our room in Berlin was very nice and modern, but when laid our heads down to sleep, there was a very disturbing noise in the room that was keeping us awake.  We tried and tried to figure out what was causing it.  We didn't want to pack up and change rooms at this point.

I was exasperated, but Jan finally figured it out.  A panel in the refrigerator and safe area was loose and vibrating, and she slipped something in the crack, and voila... no more noise!  When I was in a better mood the next day, she told me what she had used to solve the problem.  Her map!

Mark cooked us his pork chops and fixins'... es hat gut geschmeckt...

And he taught me some things about music...
